The acceptability of P2P took another big step forward over the weekend, as accounts claiming to be ‘the official profile for NIN’ appeared on a number of torrent sites, including The Pirate Bay and the private trackers What.cd and Waffles.fm. NIN has now confirmed that these accounts indeed belong to the band.

The account that was used to upload the torrent, linked to in yesterday’s piece, was from a user called ‘NINofficial‘, and included a text about the release. Similar accounts, named NIN, appeared on the private music trackers what.cd and waffles.fm on Friday, and uploaded the same torrent.

Uploads to torrent sites, claiming to be from the owners of the material are not unheard of, but are also not common. When it has happened, it’s been to public sites, and generally a hoax, which makes people all the more wary when accounts appear, claiming to be ‘official’ or from the people behind it.

However, TorrentFreak has verified that the accounts in question, ‘NIN’ on both waffles and what, and ‘NINOfficial’ on The Pirate Bay, are indeed accounts belonging to the band’s representatives. Read the rest of this entry »

BitLet is a web-based client which allows BitTorrent sharing without a torrent client being installed on your machine. Now, in recognition of this innovative system, the editors at CNET Webware.com have nominated BitLet as a finalist in the Webware 100 Awards, 2008.

BitLet: A Cute Web-Based BitTorrent Client

We first introduced BitLet back in July 2007.

BitLet is a web-based Java applet which makes it possible to download .torrent files on a computer that doesn’t have a BitTorrent client installed, which is fantastic for people who either can’t, or don’t know how to, install additional software. The site isn’t just clear and functional, it’s incredibly easy to use too - simply enter the url of the .torrent file you wish to use and sit back and wait for your chosen material to download.

In recognition of this innovative site, the editors over at CNET Webware.com have chosen BitLet to be a finalist in the Webware 100 Awards 2008. This is quite an achievement considering the heavyweights who came out on top in 2007, such as Bebo, Gmail, MySpace, Wikipedia and YouTube. BitLet is nominated in the Security and Utility division. The popular BitTorrent site IsoHunt just reached a new milestone, as they now index over 1 million torrents. In total, the torrents on IsoHunt point to 22 million files that all add up to a dazzling 743TB in data.

isohuntisoHunt has been around for ages, longer than almost any other BitTorrent site in existence today, and they are still moving forward. Last month they released a new Ajaxy comment and rating system, and today they reached another milestone.

IsoHunt founder Gary Fung writes in their forums: “It has been a long time coming, but with steady growth of active torrents from around the Web (which I’ll call the Torrentsphere from now on if you don’t mind), isoHunt’s index reached the 1 million torrents milestone 2 hours ago.” Read the rest of this entry »
